Guest repliedYes, you want it to match your input file, and since you only want to change the Description field you only need on column to match on (Directory Name) and one column to change (Description).

Guest repliedDo I remove all the other fields from the Import Field Order list, just leaving Directory name and Description?

Guest repliedYou can use Import into Active Editor for this one. I assume your input file now has two columns, one with the computer name (Directory Name?) and one with the Description? If you can get it down to just those two columns, in Excel you can save the file as a Tab Delimited text file. In Hyena double-click on the Computers folder to display your computers in the right-hand window, select all computers (you'll only update those in your input file, so it's okay to select the all), then right-click and choose Directory Functions > Import into Active Editor.
Use the Find File button to locate your input file, click the option for TAB delimiter, if your data has a qualifier (if Excel added " around your text) change the Data Qualifier to ". Import Field Order should be Directory Name, then Description. Click on Directory Name and click the Set Key Field icon to set it as the key field. At that point click the Import button. This won't actually make any changes at this point, but will verify all information to make sure there aren't any errors with your input data. When all errors have been corrected you'll click OK to send those changes to the Active Editor. Go through and verify that all changes look the way you want them to, then click Apply or OK. At this point your changes will be sent to AD.

Guest repliedHey Chuck,
Actually, I figured out to get the two lists merged. What I had was a master list Computer Names and Users (lastname, firstname), then I pulled a list from Hyena and put both side-by-side in excel. then I used the Index and Match formula to find a matching computer name in the master list and update the missing Description. We are adding the users lastname, firstname name to the computer Description field in AD. So I now have an updated list. My next problem is uploading that new list to AD in Hyena. I am assuming that I can import a file in Active editor to do this, but I don't want to screw up hundres of records if there is a mismatch.

Guest repliedCan you give more details on how you associate the user to the computer? Do you manually enter this in the Description field, or where exactly do you store this data in AD?

Excel to Hyena with Active Editor
Please pardon me if this is posted in the wrong forum. What I have is an excel spreadsheet with Computer Names and user names, what I would like to do is to pull from hyena the computer names that do not have a user name associated, import them into the spreadsheet find a match between computer names for the user name, then import the new list into hyena (AD) using active editor. I hope this makes sense.Tags: None
