  • Reporting on NTFS Permissions

    Hello,

I need to know if Hyena and Exporter Pro have the ability to generate reports on the NTFS permissions for a share. If yes, can this report be done for mutiple servers in an AD domain at one time. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Both can report NTFS permissions, and Exporter Pro can do this for multiple computers at once. It will create a delimited text file that you can open with Excel or Access.

Is there a how to anywhere on how to set this up? I just installed the app and am a novice with its use.

      Thank You

        Re: Reporting on NTFS Permissions

You can select your servers in Hyena's right window, then go to Tools->Exporter Pro->Export Selected Objects. Click the Settings button and configure Security Access, and create a template under File/Directory.

In Security Access you will set it to export permissions, and the File/Directory template is where you will set what shares you want it to run against, etc.

Make sure you disable all other exports so that only these are running. Once you have it configured you will click the Start Export button to run it.

"Click the Settings button and configure Security Access, and create a template under File/Directory"

When I click the Settings button I get a Export Properties page where I turn off all other exports but I do not see a Security Access tab or a File/Directory option

Make sure you used the Exporter Pro option following the steps I gave above.

If you are using Exporter Pro, and do not see the File/Directory option or a Security settings option, make sure that you have the latest version of Exporter Pro, which comes with Hyena (v6.3)

I apologize I was clicking on Security Access but when I do I get the Export Properties page and its already on the Security tab. There is no option to export permissions only options for exporting the security settings for shares, services, printers, and registry keys. Also I still do not see anything pertaining to File/Directory.

                    Re: Reporting on NTFS Permissions

I've upgraded to Hyena 6.3 and generated a new report. The problem I still see is that I'm getting the share permissions and not the NTFS permissions on my selected server shares.

I still do not see an option under the Export Properties for Security that allows me to select permissions.

I just ran a successful query and generated a report on the NTFS permissions for the shares. Thanks for everyone's help on this I really appreciate it.

                        Re: Reporting on NTFS Permissions

We just added a new option in the upcoming release of Exporter Pro to export the permissions on the shared directory that the share is on. This way, you don't have to configure a file/directory export template just to get the permissions on the directories that are being shared. The permissions get dumped to the same file as the share permissions.

If you want to try that option, you can send a blank email to [email protected] to get the beta.

                          Re: Reporting on NTFS Permissions

Is it possible to filter out certain directories when gathering NTFS permissions? Some of our servers have Test Director installed which create a large number (over 4 million) of directories.

                          Thanks!

Unfortunately not. You can specify the shares and paths you want with Exporter Pro's File/Directory templates, but you can't exclude directories if they are on those specified shares.
