I have two networks that I access with Hyena. One peer-to-peer Windows XP and one Novell Windows XP. The is first is slow 2 out of 3 times when expanding the initial workstation tree and 1 out of five it locks up with Task Manager showing it as Not Responding. It will sometimes resolve itself but if the icon in the top left of the window turns into a white square then its dead. The second network never locks up and the tree expands very fast. --Ed

Re: Not Responding
The 'not responding' situation is caused by Windows blocking the application. This is something that Hyena has no control over. Hyena is actually blocked by the operating system when it makes function calls, and not allowed to do anything while its blocked.
While there isn't anything that can be done on our end, I can tell you what function is causing this if you tell me step-by-step what action you are taking prior to getting the hourglass.Kevin Stanush

Re: Not Responding
It may respond 10 times in a row without a problem but I am guessing it locks up "1" out of "5" overall on one subnet (call it LAN1) and "0" on the other (call it LAN2). The steps are: Launch Hyena - Enterprise - Networks - Microsoft Windows Network - Everyone - then click the desired computer and lastly the desire item under the computer. Both LAN's respond quickly until reaching Everyone and the items under each computer. Then LAN1 experiences the problem and LAN2 does not. --Ed

Re: Not Responding
It sounds like Everyone is a Windows workgroup, right ? If so, this would be an issue with the Windows browse list, which is hard to troubleshoot. If you don't have a lot of computers (or they don't change very often) you can create a static list and go directly to the computer in question.
There could be a very slow or off-line/bad computer acting as one of the backup browers for that workgroup. Let me know if this is part of a Windows NT or Active Directory domain.Kevin Stanush

Re: Not Responding
Yes "Everyone" is a workgroup. Again LAN1 is Windows XP with a Novell server and LAN2 is Windows XP peer-to-peer with no server. Both have a workgroup of "Everyone". Again, this problem exists only with LAN1. Total of 35 nodes. Again, LAN1 is always slow to display the computers and items under computers and crash 1 of 5. --Ed

Re: Not Responding
The key is to find which computers are acting as browsers for this workgroup. Unfortunately, I don't know of a utility to determine this. Hyena can show you which roles a computer is acting as, but only one-by-one if the computers are not in a domain.
Since you have 35 nodes, it is doable one-by-one. Right click on a computer, select Properties, General. Make a note which computers have roles (checked boxes) next to Potential Browser, Master Browser, Backup Browser, and Domain Master Browser. You can then determine if you have too many, too few, none (?), or one that is acting in a browser role when it should not (ie the computer in the coffee shop, next to a hospital patient, etc.). You can then create registry entries to force the computer to not be a browser.Kevin Stanush
