  • IIS Compatibility

I am evaluating Hyena, and so far really like what I see. Before I buy I want to make sure it integrates with IIS 6. I cannot find how to evaluate that in the eval version, perhaps it is not Enterprise, and perhaps Hyena does not integrate with IIS.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

    Thanks in advance.

Hyena doesn't offer any support for IIS.

Thanks. Do you know if this is in development?

        Re: IIS Compatibility

I'm not sure what IIS integration you are needing, but we have nothing in development as there isn't anything that I know of to integrate with.

But, let me know what sort of features of IIS integration you are interested in, as I'm curious.

          Re: IIS Compatibility

I am referring to the features that are included in the Microsoft IIS Manager like www and ftp site admin, bandwidth throttling, port assignments, etc.

            Re: IIS Compatibility

These are items that are best handled by Microsoft's interfaces, as many of them are very specific to a particular version of IIS. Microsoft has the luxury of releasing a new admin tool if they need to support a new feature of IIS; but we can't realistically do that. Plus, I doubt that Microsoft has added interfaces for many of these items so that 3rd party ISVs can integrate anyway. IIS, SMS, and SQL should be managed by Microsoft's MMC snapins.

Thanks for the inquiry and clarification.

              Re: IIS Compatibility

I'm sure you have thought of this and maybe it is not possible, but can Hyena add a MS snap-in, much like MMC does? That would be way kewl! You'd have all of the Hyena advantages, plus any new items MS deploys.
              Thanks again for your replies.

                Re: IIS Compatibility

yes, we thought of this. If you right click on any AD object, and select Shell Properties, you get the same dialog as you see in MMC. MMC itself does not really do anything; all functionality is carried out by the snapin author. Hyena's 'Shell Properties' loads the snap just like MMC.

The problem, though is that Microsoft and other snapin authors view MMC and the snapins as being one and the same. Microsoft does not really want snapins viewed outside of MMC. Yet its almost impossible to build a product like Hyena as an MMC snapin as its take a ground up development effort, plus MMC imposes a lot of restrictions on the application.

The solution is for Microsoft and any snapin author to document the nodes and the data structures that are expected between any object that you see. If that were to happen, then Hyena could add the root nodes for IIS, SMS, SQL, or any product at all and everything could be done from one console. But until Microsoft releases this information, its all just a wish.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the info.
