  • Ping, Send, and WOL

The Ping option appears to only use DNS for name resolution. Any chance that WINS could also be used? If I have a bad DNS entry, it causes grief.

I am told the Send Message feature seems to really tie up the sender when selecting a large list of computers. Does the 'Ignore message delivery errors' option resolve this? I don't use the feature but I have a coworker that likes spamming out messages. Having to select all in the right pane to send a message to all users or computers in an OU is a bit of a pain. Any chance of adding the Send Message option to the OU instead of just on the user or computer object and have it select all objects in the OU?

I WOL has been added but it is too labour intensive to manage an external lookup list of names to MAC addresses. I would think that Hyena could steal a few cycles of idle time to build and maintain it in the background. For example, when a computer is clicked, you ping it so could take it one step further and pull the MAC from the ARP cache if it is in the same subnet or from WINS if you looked there.

OK, found the NetBIOS option for Ping. One down, two to go.

      Re: Ping, Send, and WOL

We are looking into options for building a MAC address table. As for sending messages, we rely on a Microsoft function to do this and don't have any control over its functionality. Messages have to be sent one-by-one to a message alias on the network, which must either be a user or computer name. OUs are just not supported.

Its the same functionality (and interface) as used by the Net Send command.

Thanks for the reply. I realize that it is just NET SEND in sheep's clothing and that NET SEND has no support for OUs built-in but a good programmer could bridge the gap.

As far as tying up Hyena for the duration it takes to run through all the computers, could it not be done async in a separate thread?

Since OUs can contain both computers and users, we think its best to let the user display the contents and then select what items to send messages to (in the right window).
