  • Error starting services

I presume this to be a rights issue since I can do this with no problems. My question is, how do I allow my help desk staff to start services on various nt4/win2k servers?

When they use Hyena to try and start stopped services they get an error:

"Unable to open service "Service Name". Overlapped I/O operation is in progress. If its a rights issue, what rights will they need? Domain Admin isn't acceptable for these folks.

    Thanks

Try logging on to one of the machines that is having this problem using your account. This will verify whether or not it is a permissions issue.

If a Help Desk user gets the error, and you logon to the same computer with your account, then we'll know for sure it is permissions-related.

If it is permission related, which I strongly feel it is, what permissions could I grant to fix it without giving them domain admin? I know this is more of a NT question than a Hyena question, but hopefully you know the answer off the top of your head

It looks like this page has this information:

I see in Hyena the "User Rights" section, that doesn't appear to be the rights they're referring to...?? I guess this is more of an active directory rights delegation thing??

            Re: Error starting services

You would have to use some sort of custom scripting tools to modify the security on the services.

It looks to me that either local admins or the Power Users group should be
able to do the functions you need, so you might experiment with adding your Help Desk group to the local Administrators or Power Users groups on a computer and see if that allows them to.

If so, then you can use Hyena to add the Help Desk group to the appropriate local group on all workstations.

This seems odd. I am getting this error on several machines and I am a domain administrator.
Even if I Logon as and re-enter my credentials I get the error. This does not happen on every machine however, only some, and all of them have been verified to have the same security setup.

Verify that immediately after getting this error in Hyena, if you try to use WinMSD or Microsoft's MMC Computer Management snapin to perform the same operation that it also fails with the same error.

Let us know what you find.
