  • Object Grouping

    hi!

i'm having a problem with Object Grouping. i don't know whether i didn't get it right or it is not working.
1- i use Object Manager to create the Object Grouping object. so far, so good.
2- it is not clear to me where (if it's in OM or the console) to put the objects beneath. either way, it doesn't work, at least the way it is supposed to.
3- the right click and then left click... is it really unclear or am i that stupid?

    thanks!!!

    Re: Object Grouping

To make objects sub-objects to your grouping, move them to directly beneath the grouping. Select these sub-objects and then click the Right button.

This physically indents them on the screen to make it easier to see they are sub-objects, and tells Object manager that this is what you want.

When you click OK to close Object Manager you'll now see your object grouping, and when you click the plus sign beside it, you will see the sub-objects.

      Re: Object Grouping

as i said, maybe i'm completly lost here, but (comments follow):

To make objects sub-objects to your grouping, move them (where? using Object Manager or the Console? and how to move them, just dragging them?? or using the Move To: button) to directly beneath the grouping. Select these sub-objects and then click the Right button.
This physically indents them on the screen to make it easier to see they are sub-objects, and tells Object manager that this is what you want.(already did that, but no-no)

When you click OK to close Object Manager you'll now see your object grouping, and when you click the plus sign beside it, you will see the sub-objects.(yep, i can see the plus sign, but again, no objects!).

      sorry for being so dumb!

        Re: Object Grouping

You'll do all of this in Object Manager. As a quick example, create a new Object Grouping and call it Computers. Don't close Object Manager, but rather click the New button.

Change the Type to Workstation, then enter in the name and computer path for that workstation and click Add.

In the window above you should see the Object Grouping and the computer objects you just created.

The workstation should be directly beneath the Object Grouping, but if it isn't, click on it to select the workstation, then use the Up or Down buttons to move it so it is directly beneath it.

Once it is there, click the Right button to physically indent it on your screen beneath the Object Grouping. Click OK, and in Hyena you should now see this object that you just created called Computers. Click the plus sign to expand it and you should see the Workstation beneath it.

If this still doesn't work for you, send an email to [email protected] and we'll help you with this.

          Re: Object Grouping

as i told you: how dumb am i?

i was using the mouse right button!!!!!!

          now it's working!

but a warning saying "not the mouse button but the RIGHT button on the OManager" won't harm anyone...

          thanks a lot!

            Re: Object Grouping

No, you are not dumb, we just have a lot of confusing functionality crammed into one dialog. We need to consider trying to rename the Right/Left buttons "Indent Right" and "Indent Left" or something. The problem is that this makes the buttons larger and creates language translation problems, so maybe bitmap graphics would be better instead of words.

Wow - Nicely handled Kevin and, if memory serves, Chris?

                  Re: Object Grouping

I had the same problem with right, it took me about 3 hours to recognize that right means the button and not the mouse click.

                  ;-)
