  • What user rights are required for Home Dir creation?

    I have a problem creating Home Dir shares on a server. My Customer Support people are now starting to create new user accounts, but they cannot create the Home Dir share. It errors with:
    Error=5 Access denied.

    The template share directory remote mask is:
    \\in-18155-app03\g$\users\%username%

    What user rights are required for a user to be able to create these Home Dir's on a remote file (member) server?

    Thank you

    The mask contains an admin share (g$), so if your users went to a command prompt and typed the command:

    md \\server\g$\users\newuser

    they would probably get the same error. See if you can give them another path to create the remote user directory, possibly through another share layer that they can have access to. Experiment by having them just create the directory through a command prompt, then modify or create a home dir. template for them to use.

      I apologize for sound stupid, but how would I go about making these changes?

      We have Home Dir's on over twenty different servers, would I have to create a new drive letter share on each one?

      Do I even need the drive$ in the template path if I was to share the parent "Users" folder to the Customer Support group?

        You should be able to just create a Users share and give your account creators full rights to the share so that they can create new directories under it. That worked as a test on my system. Try it with one of the servers to see if it works. That way, you can eliminate the path through the admin share and non-admins can then create the directory to be shared. Keep in mind that to share a directory, they also need rights to read the newly created directory (at least I did in my test). I'm not sure why Windows wants that right.
