  • Hidden shares for home directories

We need to create home directories that are hidden shares. So in short, create a folder called \%username%, then create a hidden share for that folder, \%username%$.

Where does this go? I have only been successful creating the folder, but the hidden share aspect eludes me and I don't have the luxory of trying all possible combinations.

(Can't imagine a day without my Hyena.)

Re: Hidden shares for home directories

You can do this using Home Directory Templates.

You will go to Tools->Settings->Home Dir. In the New Home Directory Mask field you will put in \\server\%username%$

The Share Directory Local Mask will be d:\users\%username%

Share Directory Remote Mask will be
    \\server\d$\users\%username%

You will set these paths to match your needs then add the appropriate NTFS and Share security settings.

If you have trouble getting this going send an email to [email protected] and we will be glad to assist you.

Re: Hidden shares for home directories

On the top left of your template screen is a field called New Home Directory Mask. Type \\SERVERNAME\%username%$ in this field. Pick a drive letter to right, and any other pertinent info, scripts, permissions below this. In the right half of that screen is Share Directory Local Mask, where you would put the local location of where you want these hidden shares to go. In my instance, it is "D:\users\%username%". Immediately below that is Share Directory Remote Mask, where you put a UNC location of that above directory. IN my instance again, it would be "\\SERVERNAME\D$\Users\%username%". Below that is another option for permissions. I don't have any check boxes checked on either side. Ours works like a charm, saving us several minutes per new user account.

Re: Hidden shares for home directories

I follow the instruction but not working.
I create a Homedirectory template and set as:
In New HomeDirectory Mask I put \\server\%username%$
The Share Directory Local Mask, I put H:\HomeUser$\%username%$ (Note: I created a hidden share folder name HomeUser$ before)
In Share Directory Remote Mask, I put \\server\H$\HomeUser$\%username%$
In Home Directory (NTFS) Security setting, I put %username% with FULL permission.
I select Override existing directory security
I select Verify Before overwritting existing security.
At the right side (Home Share Security Setting), I put %username% as a full permission. I select Override existing share Security Setting, and select Verify before overwritting existing security.

From SET OWNER Permission, I select Set the owner to be user (%username%).

When I modify the profile property of the test user, it create a new folder correctly at the right place. But no hidden share to the new folder.

Am I doing wrong some where ?

Re: Hidden shares for home directories

Change your Share Directory Local Mask to H:\HomeUser$\%username% and your Share Directory Remote Mask to \\server\H$\HomeUser$\%username%.

You only need the $ on the New Home Directory Mask field as indicated by the instructions above.

This will create a share in the format of \\server\username$.

The $ sign makes it hidden to users browsing shares on the server. You will still see it listed under Shares on the server as username$.

I have tried that either, but still did not create a share for the new folder. It just create a new folder but no share.

Re: Hidden shares for home directories

I just caught another mistake. I copied and pasted your path, but this isn't correct:

                \\server\H$\HomeUser$\%username%

You said you have a share for HomeUser$, and if that is correct, change the Share Directory Remote Mask to:

                \\server\HomeUser$\%username%

I tried that, but It still not work. Are there any steps between your suggest setup and when I select user from user list and applied the template?
