  • Deleting User

I have been using your product for a while now.

But lately I have been getting an error when trying to delete a user.

"the directory service can perform the requested operation only on a leaf object"

This is on a Windows 2003 Domain.

    Re: Deleting User

It would appear that there is a sub-container under the user (I presume that this is only happening on one or a few users). The AD function that Hyena uses to delete users does not support deleting them if there are sub-containers under the user. See if you can verify the existence of the subcontainer by looking at the user in Active Directory Users and Computers or a general directory browser. I've never encountered a situation where a user has a sub-container under them, and if you find it, let me know if you can determine what created it.

      Re: Deleting User

I viewed the accounts with Active Directory Users and Computers and saw what I think was the sub-container.

We use a product called Digital-Persona Pro which is a fingerprint software. (Biometrics)

What is interested is we have been using that product for several months now.

      And never had this issue.

If you can, contact the support group with this vendor to see if they always create a sub-container for user accounts, or if there was just a special case here. It is very unusal to see sub-containers under user accounts, as the standard AD function to delete objects does not work is sub-containers are found.

I'm trying to determine if this is going to be a recurring problem or not for you.

          I will check with them.

As a test I created a new account. And was able to delete it with Hyena.

And the accounts I couldn't delete with Hynea, I can with Active Directory Users and Computers

            Re: Deleting User

One other thing I forgot to tell you. The next time you encounter an account that you can't delete normally, try right clicking on the account (in Hyena), select Account Functions->Shell Functions->Delete. This uses Microsoft's shell functions to perform the delete and it should work the same was as in MMC. Note that Hyena does not know what function you selected so the item won't be removed from the GUI (press F5 to refresh).

If we get more instances of our object delete functions failing due to this, we can use a different routine to delete, which we do for computer accounts now, as they have sub-containers frequently.

Tried that, I don't get an error. But it doesn't delete the account. I still see it after doing a refresh.

I also verified it was still there using Active Directory Users and Computers

I was afraid that might happen. Sometimes the shell functions, especially the delete, just don't work. They don't work from the Find dialog, and sometings interactively. It works on my end, but I'm using Windows 2003.

Any update on this? I would hate to stop using this tool.

I didn't see your previous post. Let me look at this tomorrow and see about adding a patch in the current beta (released today)

I think I can add a special registry setting to change the behavior in the beta, and see how testing goes from there. I'll keep you informed. Let me know what version of Hyena you are using now.

                        Thanks

We've added and tested the advanced registry key, which will be available in the next beta update, early next week.
