• Adding new account to default groups upon creation

I know there is a simple way to do this but i can't find it.

I am looking for a way to automaticaly add new accounts to certian default groups upon creation. Possibly a setting in the template I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

Create a basic user, name it something that stands out. Mine is called PHX_Admin Template, this is a user account that belongs to basic security groups and distribution groups. You can set up a few other things but you get the gist of it.
Then simply right click on the object and select copy. That simple, of course there is some more features but you should start with the basics.

Or did you mean for me to do that within the Program? : )

Yes, this is done in Hyena. When you copy a user certain fields are copied to the new user, including group memberships. Setup a user with the settings you want and whenever you need to create a new user with those settings, simply right-click and choose Copy.

Ahhh. Ok. I Got it now. So there are no fields in any of the template settings to add to security groups huh?

Ok...copy it is.

Thanks guys!

Ok. Wait a sec. I just tried that and the problem is, now I can't choose a template. It never asked me and I need this for the homedrive settings. Any ideas?

Under Tools->Settings->Home Dir make sure the box is checked to Confirm template prior to usage (when copying users).

Also, your template user must have home directory settings configured that match what you have in your template.

Your original post said nothing about home directories. You were asking about copying the security groups. I suggest this strongly, once you made your dummy user account aka template. Open it with Hyena and go to home directory. type in the path ONCE. For instance, \\servername\users\%username% This way each time you copy the profile it will create the folder with his username.
It will revert back to the dummy acount aka template. This may not be an issue any longer but I did it more then once and it wouldn't create the new home directory correctly.

Home directory are a hole nother area to work on.

Re: Adding new account to default groups upon creation

You're right Trammel, it did not say anything about home directories. I think we're getting a bit confused though.

Ok..here's what I'm asking and I going to try to be a bit more thorough this time.

Ok, here's what I've got. I've created my templates within Hyena BUT the issue is when I choose my container to create the new user and select my template with all my home dir and profile settings, I'm not seeing any place to have the new account automatically added to the default security groups.

Now, if I create a dummy accout in the domain, enter all the home dir and profile folder info and add it to the default security groups then do a copy, what would I even need to use Hyena for? I mean everything would be set already. AND, if I do it this way I do not get the option to even use a template.

I guess the question is if I'm using a template for the home dir's is there any way I can put the new acct in some default security groups at the same time other than doing it manually?

Make sense or did I make it worse?

Re: Adding new account to default groups upon creation

You create this account one time with the settings you want, then from that point on rather than using Add New, you right-click on that user and choose Copy. This saves you the steps of adding newly created users to the groups you want, etc.

The template is applied to the new user even when copying an existing user. Make sure you read my post from above and verify that you have the box checked and that the user you are copying has the home directory specified that way you want future users to be setup.

The template selection when doing a copy will come up at the end of the process rather than at the beginning like you see when creating a new user from scratch.

If you are not seeing the screen to select your template, make sure:

1. You've read my post above.
2. You have more than one template created.
3. When you choose the Copy option, the Create New User dialog comes up. Make sure you don't have the box checked to Run Active Directory Creation Wizard.

Ahhh. Ok. I was unaware the option to choose a template came up at the end. I was used to seeing it at the beginning. Very nice.

Thank you very much for your help guys!!

Uh oh. How come it does not populate the User Logon name on the account tab?

That field and the UPN Suffix will have to be done manually.
