  • Access denied to registry but not WMI

Hi - just evaluating Hyena at present after seeing it in action at a company i was visiting in the US (we are in UK).

I have mixture of XP/2000 PCs in single domain. I thought all the 2000 PCs were the same but on some i can't access the registry etc (but can run the WMI stuff). Get the message Access Denied.

I am logged on as Domain Admin when running Hyena. Tried adding Domain Admin user as member of admin group to one of the PCs where problem but no difference.

    Any ideas?

Make sure the remote registry service is running, and if they are running XP SP2 you may need to open the firewall.

Re: Access denied to registry but not WMI

I have had the same problem more or less. I can access nearly everything on a remote computer except several tabs in the computer's "Computer Properties" These tabs are the Software, System, Environment and Network tabs. Whenever I click on either of those I get a message like "Unable to open registry key 'System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameter s' on '\\computername'. Access is denied".

Throughout each of the tabs I listed there are a total of 8 of these messages. It seems that whatever is preventing registry access here is also preventing my patch management software (Shavlik) from accessing the computer as well.

The workstation is running Windows XP SP2. Firewall is turned off and the remote registry service is running. I cannot connect to the registry remotely through the regedit program on another computer either(connect network registry).

I went through each key that Hyena identified as having no access to verify permissions and they are all set the same as ever other machine.

      Thoughts?

Do you have File and Printer Sharing installed on these computers?

Other than registry permissions, remote registry service, and file and printer sharing, I'm not sure what else you would need.

Re: Access denied to registry but not WMI

              Hi,

i've the same problem. I have a mixture of XP/2K and I haven't acces to registry of a lot of computers.

Remote acces service is enable, I'm logging on domain administrator when I launch Hyena.

Strangly, I've the same configuration (normally..) between my computers but a part don't create problems ans the rest do it.

              Can u help me ?

Re: Access denied to registry but not WMI

sorry i'hve more information to present you.

First, this computers doesn't have firewall. Remote acces service is already started. I'hev logically acces to the registry with domain administrator account.

But on remote acces, i can't open registry; perhaps, when i reinitialize ACL directly on the computers with propagation of acces to child folders of registry, at this moment a can acces on remote acces. After many times and reboot (sorry i can't quantify this), registry seem reinitialize in the same configuration before ACL reinitialize/propagation and at this moment i can't any more connect on remote acces.

i hope that this information can help you to propose me a solution.

                thx a lot

Can you manage other aspects of these computers ? For example, when you look at the Shares, can you see the C$, D$, etc. shares and can you see the files as well ?

And, can you verify that regedt/regedt32 get the same access denied error when you try to access the registry ?

Re: Access denied to registry but not WMI

yes i confirm, i can access to administrative shares (c$, d$, admins$ etc..), I can manage users, local groups, printers, session, open files, services, peripherals, events, HDD, users acces, 'performance' (sorry i don't know the traduction in english) and even WMI !

With Hyena I can't access to remote registry and it's the same problem when, in regedit, I make a network connexion of remote registry

It's very strange and its problem block me to use another application as Microsoft baseline whose tell me that its can't access to information to remote computers.

Very strange. Have you another idea, i'm opened
