Checking for Updates

Having just updated to Hyena 8.5, I wanted to disable the automated update checks. In previous versions all that was necessary would be to delete WiseUpdt.exe from the Hyena directory. But version 8.5 uses stuc.exe to check for updates, and deleting that file causes this error message to be displayed every time Hyena starts:

Unable to execute the SystemTools Update Checker (stuc.exe). The system cannot find the file specified.

Is there a way to stop the update checking without incurring the error message every time I launch Hyena?

To disable the automatic update check you have to create a new registry entry under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adkins Resource\Hyena\Advanced

Create an entry for DisableUpdateChecker and set it to a '1' (REG_DWORD), it should disable it.

Thank you. That did it. Could this perhaps be selectable under Settings – Advanced in a future version?

No, we really don't want people to disable it, as not knowing that there is an update is a frequent complaint (a lot of users don't check the web, get our email, etc.).

The update check interval is only every 30 days, so why did you want to disable this feature. Note that you can manually still check for updates on the help menu.

Why don’t we want the update notification? Government agencies, and probably most mid-sized and large corporate entities, generally don’t like/allow direct downloads of executables to the network. This is particularly true for applications that regularly run under elevated privileges. There are multiple reasons for this, but the major ones are malware avoidance and configuration control. While it doesn’t guarantee there won’t be any problems, all updates are supposed to go through our test lab prior to making it to the production network. Having that update window pop up on a regular basis is just too much of an invitation for trouble for a new administrator or someone who knows better but just doesn’t think the rules apply to them.

OK, thanks. Maybe we should make that window clearer as I too don't like applications that download the .exe. Our 'update checker' only checks to see if a newer version is available, and if so, you are told what it is and then you click the button to go to the download page, where you can then decide what to do. We don't automatically download anything as we don't know what architecture, language, and even if your maintenance supports it. Its more of a 'see if a newer version is available' feature.

I didn't think it would actully do the update, but it takes you to the place where you can get the update. That's close enought to do the damage. For us, out of sight is out of mind.
