Setting properties on Machines that dont reside in the same OU

Hi

At present, I can only change the properties on multiple machines that reside in the same OU. For example, I click on the OU in the "left" pane and the machine are populated within the "right" thus allowing me to select numerous machines and changing the property in the one job (changing a start up service for example).

Is it possible for multiple machines to be populated into the "right" pane from different OU's without having to go through the entire domain list under "All computers"... Maybe creating a custom template with the chosen machines or even the functionality to select multiple OU’s??

You can select multiple OUs in Hyena's right window, then right-click and choose Query Active Directory to run a query against those OUs. Choose Select/Customize Query and you can create a filter to show only computers.

Thanks for the reply...

I thought something along these lines but it causes two issues... Firstly, if you have OU's within OU's and machines are within each, then these cant be seen (back to first base scenario). Secondly, the More functions option isnt available when you right click the multiple machines.

Do you think it could be achieved by creating an additional Node.. For example, I created a Object Group Node but cant seem to grasp how I get a Imported computer list to be child objects of the node I created?

I'm not quite sure I understand. When you edit the settings for the query, there is a checkbox to Includes subcontainers and sub-OUs in search.

As far as the More Functions option, that is still available when you select multiple computers in the right-hand window.

Yes, the sub containers checkbox is ticked but only lists the sub Ou's, not the objects within them. I need to be able to select multiple computer accounts from different OU's \ Sub OU's and the use the more functions option.

As it currently stands, if I select an OU from the left window (which populates the right window) I can indeed then select more than one machine and use the more functions option. However, the custom query and filter doesn’t show this option when used.

I apologise if this isn’t coming across very clear. Perfect scenario would be to have a custom Node created within the Objects manager and then specify Multiple ADSI Paths against the OU's you want.

Try this and see if this will work:

Select a few OUs in Hyena's right window, then right-click and choose Query Active Directory->Select/Customize Query.

Click New and in the Query Name box type something like Computers. In the box at the bottom type:

{objectCategory=computer}

Check the box to Included subcontainers and then click OK.

If that gives you computers for those OUs, then you can go back in and add the other fields you want for that query.

And, once displayed in the right window you can select those computers, right-click and choose More Functions.

Ahh, think it nailed now...

The problem seemed to be that the More Functions option isn’t available if one of the machines is a DC.
