  • Local Workstation

I am no longer able to view the local workstation. The error: "Unabable to open network resource. An extended error has occurred." I began receiving the error several weeks ago. No changes to the network have been implemented, but unsure about changes to the work station policies. Where should I begin to look?

    Re: Local Workstation

I assume you mean the local workstation object in the left window. Click the first toolbar button (Object Manager), click on your local workstation object and see what is in the path field. Also, what function are you doing when you get this error ?

Yes, the left window pane. I am just opening the object to view the resourse when I receive the error.
      Object Path = \\computer name
I tried adding the fully qualified name but Hyena will not save that entry after the update.

        Re: Local Workstation

Lets try to generate a different error using a Microsoft utility. Click Start->Run, type MMC, press enter. When MMC open, add the Computer Management snapin and tell it to manage the local computer. Do you get any errors when you use this snapin ?

Also, verify that this is the complete error message that you get in Hyena. And, after you click OK, what objects are displayed under the local computer ? Finally, what type of computer is this ?

          Re: Local Workstation

I am using a Dell Latitude 620, with Win XP SP2 (the standard Laptop configuration in our environment).

Running mmc and connecting to the local machine did not generate any errors. I am able to view System Tools, Storage, Service and Applications. No error.

The error: "Unable to open network resource. An extended error has occurred." Is the only error and I am seeing Disk Space, Scheduled Jobs and Registry ( which can be opened).

            Re: Local Workstation

You can try creating a manual entry for your computer in Object Manager (File->Manage Object View), and you can try both Netbios and DNS paths. The local workstation object's path is fixed and can't be changed.

When you click on the + next to Local Workstation, there should be a message on the status bar if an error is found getting the workstation type. This is what causes it to not have the normal object types for NT and later computers.

                    Re: Local Workstation

Its the service called "Server" on the display name or 'lanmanServer' for the actual name. You need to start this service. It should be set to auto-start.

finally, found that File and Print sharing had been removed at some point. Re-installed and working fine. Tks for your help.
