  • Filter computer object in left pane

I am having a hard time trying to search for information on this. I am sure that its in here somewhere, but I would like to ask the questions anyhow...

In the left pane, under my Windows 2000/2003 Domain object View, its broken down into multiple categories like computers, all users ...

I have over 3000 objects under computers here. I would like to filter this down to about 400 - 500 object based on a specific criteria, (like all computer objects in OU A).

I can do this and make it show up on the right hand pane, but I don't want to loose the functionality of the left hand pane. Is there an easy way to do this? I know I can create an OU object view, but I run into the same a problem there where I have lots of computers split up into multiple sub-ou's. I would like to view all these at once on the left side.

    Thanks

I have the same question. When I open up my domain, I can't use 'Servers' because it gives an incomplete list because it uses the Windows browse list. So I have to open 'Computers' which shows everything in AD, including all of the workstations. I would like to be able to filter the left pane, even if it's just on a text string and not something fancy like machine type to get all servers.

    I'm using version 11.0.3 Rev. D.

    Thanks for any help,
    Doug

Hyena does not have a method to run a query in the left window, its meant to be a general browser for AD. However, you can filter it using a combination of the OU filtering toolbar and an advanced setting.

When you click on an OU, there is a toolbar displayed on the bottom of the window, called the OU filtering toolbar. Click, for example, the "computer" button so that its 'down' and you will get just computers when you double-click on an OU or Container. You can do combinations of computers, users, etc. However, the OU filtering toolbar has no effect on the left window (as it would get confusing).

But, you can change a setting to make the filtering toolbar work in the left tree window. Go to Tools > Settings > Advanced and set to 'TRUE' the setting named "UseOUToolbarSettingsInTree". Then, you can filter just computers, users, etc. in the left window.

But if you want to run an actual filter in the left window, the only way would be to change the default query assigned to the left tree window, and that would impact all OUs, probably not something you want.

We do have plans to do some redesign of Hyena's queries and how they interact with the GUI, but didn't really have this sort of item on the list of changes. The problem is how / where to indicate, for example, that you want to expand the Computers container or some OU, that you want to run a specific LDAP filter. Hyena is currently only designed to do this in the right window, so if that is something you want to do, let us know.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I did NOT mean the 'Computers' OU (Under Containers/OUs), but rather the 'Computers' choice directly under the domain, where the other choices are Domain Controllers, Servers, All Groups, etc.

        Thanks,
        Doug

The "Computers" object is already internally filtered by using a hard-coded LDAP filter directly in Hyena. There isn't a way to filter it in the left window further, as we don't know how or where to offer the option. Currently, you click the + key next to it, so that essentially expands the container, or in this case, it runs a pre-defined internal filter. One thing we could consider doing, although this would not help in the short term, is expanding the capability now where you can include a static OU/container in the left window and bind a query/filter to that. Then, it would display the same filtered object list in either window.

But the only way currently to display a filtered list of anything is to use the right window. The left window can only be filtered down by the object type (computer, user, etc) by using a combination of the filtering toolbar and that advanced setting.

The easiest way to filter for Servers is to create an OU or OU structure and move the server accounts into that structure.

One of the drawbacks to a lot of features, if both remembering them all and allowing users to know they are there. You CAN run any query and get the results in Hyena's left window, by holding down the CONTROL key while selecting the query from the Query Active Directory > ...select query.... menu.

Note that the left window can only show two (2) attributes. The 2nd attribute is displayed in ( ). So, if you run a query in the left window like this, you have to make sure the first attribute is always present, such as the cn or name field.

By create a query with a custom LDAP filter, you can essentially display any matching directory element in either the left or right window. The filtering toolbar is not needed at all.

Sorry for not remembering this long forgotten feature added in v7.0.
