How do filters work?

my AD returns a total of 7200 user objects. when i apply a filter on the group membership field by entering the name of one of the groups, i only see 30 objects but if I go to Active Directory Users and computers, I see more than 1000 objects in that group

any ideas?

Fields in the right window are limited to 255 characters, and anything beyond that is truncated. The Filter will search the text in the right window, so the group you are searching for is probably truncated for these users.
