  • Connecting to Multiple Sites via VPN and Managing them.

    Hi Guys,

Here is a Question I want to throw out in the open to see if you can help

We have a support Dept and their primary role involves a lot of remote access work to a large client base. It will involve either RDPing to Servers for admin work or directly to client machines. Even auditing remotely
All work is carried out by VPN'ing into each client as and when is needed and then carrying out the relevant work.

The question is, could Hyena connect to each client via the VPN tunnel (with client VPN or Site-2-Site links).

We have installed a demo copy on our LAN and obviously it picks up our domain fine, but could you "add" all the client's domains and then use Hyena to manage them remotely via the VPN connections?

If that is possible, then to expand, can you add the admin rights into Hyena needed for each domain so all work can be done? (if you see what I mean)

I'm hoping this doesn't sound too far fetched and makes sense to some of you out there.

    Thanks in advance...

    Andy.

You can add the other domains (or computers) to Hyena's view by going to File->Manage Object View. As long as Windows can get through the VPN, and you have good name resolution to the systems on the other side, you should be able to manage them with no problems.

For security, the recommended method is to create an account in each domain that has the same username/password as you are logged in with. Windows will then use pass-thru authentication and allow you to manage everything as needed.

      cmccullough,

      Thanks for the reply.

That was my initial thoughts, just to create an account on the otherside matching the ones this side. I was just wondering if you could enter the "domain admin" credentials of the LAN you were trying to connect to via VPN at the top of the 'Domain' tree in Hyena. Perhaps that isnt possible?

Name resolution.. Again, very true. Do we need to be aware of any special 'routines' for name resolution, or as long as we can get replies from the FQDN of the servers at the remote sites, all should be good to go?

      Regards

      Andy

If the remote domains are Active Directory, there's no way to specify credentials. If any are NT, you can right-click on one of the controllers and use the Logon As function. This works on individual computers as well.

For name resolution, that should be all you need, but it is fairly easy to test this to verify that everything works in your environment.

          Yep,

All of our clients (or at least 95% of them) are 2K or 2003, so they all have AD...

I'll give it a whirl later...

          Thanks for the advice

          A.

I am running Hyena remotely over a VPN in support of several LAN's. I can ping and or take control of any local workstation (WS)using VNC but Hyena does not see any local workstations and I don't appear to be able to add any. One client is a Netware server and Windows 2000 Pro WS; the other is just peer-to-peer and XP WS.
