• Adding users to local admins

I'm trying to add users to the local admin group from Hyena and I'm getting an error message that says "Unable to change group membership for "Administrators". The specified account name is not a member of the local group.'

Any way to get around this?

What steps exactly are you taking to add the members?

Re: Adding users to local admins

In Hyena, I expand one of the computers I'm interested in to display the Local Groups object. I then expand the Local Groups object and then right-click the Administrators object to select Properties. This is where I then attempt to select a user in the 'Not Members' area to add to the 'Members' area. I'm able to move a user from right to left, however once I click OK, I get the error.

Send the following screen shots to [email protected]:

        1. The Group Properties tab just prior to clicking OK.

        2. The error message.

Re: Adding users to local admins

I suspect that one or more of the existing members of the group that you are changing has a problem. Hyena can't add the new member as there is a problem with an existing member.

You can probably work around this by right clicking on the computer in the right window, and selecting More Functions, Add member to Local Group.

I was able to add the user using the method you specified. More Functions worked.

Any idea what may be causing the error using the other way? I can't even add myself the other way.

I believe the difference is that the More Functions option is able to insert the new member. The other way rewrites the group membership using everything in the left window.

The problem is not with the members you are adding but rather in resolving one of the members already in the group.

Thanks for the help. I can work with this.

I believe you need to enter it domainname\username instead of just the user name.

It won't work that way either. If I try and select the user name from the right dialog or if I enter domainname\username, the only way I can get it going is the previous method.

Like I said, there is an entry in your existing group members for this group that is preventing you from adding others.

I'm not sure I understand your point. Each of our machines has only Domain Admins and the local administrator account in the Local Admin group.

hmmmm, with the computer on the right pane, right click it. Click more functions then add/remove member from group. Here is a SS of mine and it works fine. The results files will give you some good info.

Maybe Hyena can change the / to a \ in the next release.

That's the only way I can get it to work. If I try to actually open the Properties of the Local Admins Group on a specific system and then add them there, it won't work.

It just seems like it should.

What kstanush is trying to say I think, is that you won't see a user in the selection if he already exist? No matter, the way I exaplined is great when you select multiple computers and run this. If your just connecting to one, just make a tool and put this in the command mmc.exe c:\windows\system32\compmgmt.msc /computer:%E% If you are on a 2000 machine change this line to reflect winnt
