  • Limit network adapter / subnet search

    Hi!

We are using Hyena 5.2c in our organization. I have experienced extremely slow response when I try to pull a list of all computers in a domain, or try to access printer properties on the print servers. In troubleshooting this, I discovered that when I disable the VMWare adapters on my system (Windows XP SP1), it almost cuts the time for the above operations in half. Namely, from the time I click on the Hyena icon, select the domain, select to display computers, move to the print server, display its printers, then open the properties, the time with the VMWare adapters enabled was 1 min 45 sec compared to 55 seconds with the adapters disabled.
My questions is: is there a way to configure Hyena not to search for computers on all network adapters (subnets), but only use specified ones?

    Thanks for any input.

Hyena depends on Windows for this communication, so there is nothing that can be changed in Hyena. Hyena issues the appropriate calls, and Windows handles the rest.

If you don't have too many print servers, you can enter these computers manually into Hyena (File->Manage Object View) and then you can go directly to that computer's printers instead of having to navigate through the domain. Most of the operations that you just described should take only a few seconds. I'd be curious how the performance would be if you were to be doing this operation and VMWare was not involved at all.

Actually, that is exactly what I am doing. We have only 4 print servers, and they are all listed separately, so I don't have to navigate trough the domain tree. I will try to uninstall VMWare, and check for any speed improvements, thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Limit network adapter / subnet search

Using VMWare does cause a significant slow down in Hyena for specific queries only. For me, it was my server view query that took forever and made Hyena act as if it had locked up. The slow-down problem only occured after adding VMWare Workstation to my box, so I disabled the VMWare specific connections and poof, the speed of the queries was back to normal.
