Generate report of installed software

I know Hyena can show what's in add/remove programs on a PC, is there anyway to use it as a software inventory tool? We need to build a report of all installed software for an upcoming software audit.

The new export function in Hyena 5.5 allows you to get this information for multiple computers. The data comes from the Uninstall key in the registry.

Now a question about the exporter:

I'm trying to generate a installed software list for an NT4 domain. When I pick NT Domain though, it's exporting for EVERY SINGLE computer account in the domain. Do I have to type in some special path in to only get the SERVERS?

Rather than using a Domain object you'd have to use an Object Grouping and then add the Servers you want to export for to that Grouping. Then export for that grouping rather than the entire domain.

Yeah I did see that, but do I really have to add each server one by one? I guess it's only a one time deal so it's not that big of a deal, just a couple hundred servers!

What you might be able to do (if I understand this right), is to go to the Computers tab on the Export Configuration Properties dialog and enable the Filtering option. Click the Set Filter button and set the filter to include servers, domain controllers, etc.

Be careful that if you select "server" on the function grouping, you may still grab more computers than you want, as a 'server' to Microsoft is any computer that is sharing a directory or printer.

Yeah, I tried that too. Unfortunately every single computer in our company has file and print sharing installed, and they all have C$ shares, etc. They're all still coming up. It'd be nice if I could make like a flat text file with all my servers and import that, or drag and drop them from the Hyena interface!

What you can do is create an Object Grouping in Hyena and add your servers to it. Create the grouping in Object Manager, then go back to Hyena, double-click on your Servers object to display them in the right window. Select them in the right window, right-click and choose Add to Object Manager. Object Manager will come up, select the servers then click the Right button.

This should physically indent them on the screen below the object grouping you created. Save that and make sure you see the newly created grouping in Hyena.

If so, go to Exporter and choose Configuration->Import. Use the browse button and find ad_objects.dat and click OK. Delete everything that gets added besides the grouping you created and you should be set.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I suspect that the 'Server' option on the right side of the Filter dialog may pertain to any computer running the Server service. Having a C$ share should not do it, but again I'm not sure.

But what should work is NOT checking the Server option, but the NT Server option instead on the left side (and maybe the PDC/BDC too).

One thing that I may add in the next couple of days is an option to suppress errors when the computer fails the ping test. The problem is that the filter option requires a direct check to the computer to see what kind of computer it is. But if the computer is not online, the timeout is dreadful. So, a ping can be done first, but that may timeout if the computer is not there, turned off, etc., generating a lot of messages that are not needed.

We are still trying to get all of the bases covered with the new exporting routines.
