  • Accessing Workgroup Machines

I have many XP/2000 PC's on our WAN that are in workgroups and not domains. Can I access the machines easily through their workgroups or do I have to manually add each machine one by one to the object viewer?

    Thanks in advance.

See if you can view them through the Enterprise object first. If that doesn't work we can show you how to import a file containing these computers to keep you from having to enter them one at a time.

Thanks. I have tried to view the systems through the Enterprise object, but with no luck. I would appreciate the file import tip.

      Thanks in advance.

        Re: Accessing Workgroup Machines

What you'll do is create your input file and name it QSTATION.DAT, with one line per computer.

Then go into Object Manager under File->Manage Object View and click the New button. Change the Type drop-down to Object Grouping and give it the name of the workgroup these computers are in, then click Add.

Click the Import Quick Access file button and find the file that you created. This will import the computers from that file. Select the newly added computers in the list above and click the Right button. This should physically indent them beneath the object grouping you created. Click OK, and you now have an object with these computers in it.

          Re: Accessing Workgroup Machines

I was able to import the objects as you described using the QSTATION.DAT file. Thank you.

Now, I am trying to figure out how to access the systems through an Administrator-level account. Since the systems are not part of the domain, I can't use a domain admin type account.

When I try to launch Hyena with "Runas" a local administrator account, I am asked to re-register Hyena and then replace the existing database.

Is there an easier way to access both domain systems and non-domain systems? Specifically I want to be able to check hotfixes applied and software installed.

Thanks again for the quick support.

If there are a number of computers, the RunAs might be the best solution. You can also right-click on a computer and choose Logon As and supply local account information, but you'll have to do this one at a time.

where is the logon as information stored?

is it kept from session to session?

I have several non-domain workstations I need to administer and sure hate typing it in each time!

                McZook:

This is not stored between sessions for security reasons. You can choose to have Hyena use that for your current session, but once you restart you'll have to enter it again.

Thanks for the quick response, even if I don't like the answer.

so you recommend using RunAs in cases like mine? Does Hyena share the Objects ?

Either that or create a duplicate username and password in each domain that matches what you login with. Windows will use that to authenticate you.
