  • Windows 9x clients showing up as unknown

    Hi All,

I know this has passed the list hundreds of times, and I know most of you are thinking you still has Windows 9X on the network... I DO !!!

Anyway. We have a complete mixed enviroment that ranges from 95 to XP clients. We are upgrading so in the next year all problems should be solved... (I need an aspirine). Some of the 9x clients are showing up GRAY type UNKNOWN in the hyena list. I have narrowed it down to the fact that file and print sharing is not installed on those machines. Can someone confirm this for me.

If this is the case then I was wondering if someone had any experience in turning on file and printer sharing from an NT4.0 login script.

Aside from that HYENA is the best. Integrated it with EMCO network inventory and it kicks M$ SMS ass anyday.

    Thanx

Hyena gets the computer list from the domain, and then uses the Windows Browse List to determine computer type, online/offline status, etc.

Computers listed this way would be because they are missing from your Browse List.

Okay I get that. But how do I get the machines in the browse list? Do I need to install File & printer sharing?

I believe the services that are required for browsing are included in File and Print Sharing, so yes you would probably need that.

Thanx for the help. Now just to figure out a way to install file and printer service using the login script! Anyone any clues, or even better a solution.
