  • Error connecting to windows 2000 PDC

Downloaded the 30-day trial. Trying to connect to a windows 2000 domain controller.

Entering \\servername. When I try to see container/ou, I get the following error:

Unable to access Active Directory Path LDAP://server. Logon Failure.

    Any ideas?

Are you able to access this computer if you expand your domain object and find the controller in the Domain Controllers object?

Deleted the domain. Added it back using Windows Domain, Source Controller is \\servername.

Expand domain tree and see Servers (can't open).
Expand users and see all users. Select a user and get error:

Unable to access AD path LDAP://SERVER/rootDSE. Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password.

      We have two servers here:

Windows 2000 (PDC) and NT 4.0 (server).

      I selected Win2000 Domain. Specified LDAP://domainname
      LDAP://servername

Domain shows up but when I expand Containers/OUs, I get the LDAP error again.

Make sure you have the Admin Pack installed on your computer if you are running Windows 2000 Pro or XP.

The easiest way to determine this is to go to Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Active Directory Users And Computers.

If you don't have this, you need to install the Admin Pack. If you do have it, try administering this computer with ADU&C and see if it is able to access it.

What is the fastest way to install the Admin Pack? Via CD or internet? Does XP come with this via Add/Remove components?

Installed the Admin Pak and am still getting the same error. Can't attach to a domain using Hyena or ADUC.

Re: Error connecting to windows 2000 PDC

Connected to an NT 4.0 domain. Can see all users and their account properties.

Removed some groups from a users' account and got the following error:

Unable to update user information for 'username'. Access is denied.

                Am I missing something here?

Re: Error connecting to windows 2000 PDC

For the most part your problems seem related to permissions issues. You should make sure you are logged on with an Administrator account for these domains, and that you aren't using the Run As command to run Hyena.

Also, you can try right-clicking on the PDC for your NT domain and choosing Logon As. Enter in the Admin account and password, and then see if you have problems managing users for that domain.
