Can't remove users from certain groups

I'm trying to remove some users that no longer have admin rights from local and global admin groups. I'm getting a message that says: 'Unable to remove *username* from the selected global group. This operation is not allowed on this special group.' What do I need to do?

Do these users by chance have these groups assigned as their primary group ? If so, then you have to first assign the users to a different primary group before they can be removed from this group. This may require a two-step process. We unfortunately don't get back a better error message from Windows.
