  • Remote connection to a domain

    Hi there

I currently use a laptop to connect to our NT4 domain while connected to the network and also via a VPN from home. I am using Win200pro on the laptop and while I am connecting remotely I still logon to the domain instead of localy.

When I try to use Hyena (2.5.2) it says that no domain controller can be contacted. Windows authenticates me fine when I try to connect to shares but not Hyena.

I am going through a firewall to do this.

    Any ideas.

    Cheers

    Simon

Re: Remote connection to a domain

Try creating and LMHOSTS file on your laptop with an entry like:

    209.85.98.12 computer #PRE #DOM:domain

You might also be able to just use Quick Access if you are administering a small number of machines from your laptop.

Quick Access allows you to enter either a computer name or IP address of the remote machine to access it.

The firewall shouldn't be an issue if you can do your administration with other utilities on your machine.

I am also experiencing the identical problem, however, I do have a lmhosts file and it does define the domain in there. Any other ideas?

Re: Remote connection to a domain

One of our customers that was having this problem was able to fix it by turning on Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on his Windows 2000 computer.

Re: Remote connection to a domain

I need to access a Domain for which I MUST use a different userid & password. Is it possible to do this via the LMHOSTS file, or is there another method. I do not have a problem connecting to the computer, but any administration is "access denied" because I am unable to enter my authentication.

          Thanks for your help

You can right-click on the computer and choose Logon As. This will allow you to supply a username and password to authenticate on that computer.

Golly Gee, am I an idiot or what?

OK, here's another one. I hope its not as easy, or I will have to go hide my head in shame...

Is there a way to open a remote console on another machine?

              Thanks again

Not builtin, but if you have a utility you can create a Custom Tool and accomplish this.

For example, some of our customers want a remote control function so they use PCanywhere or the freeware VNC and create a Custom Tool. They can then just right-click on a computer and choose the tool they created and establish a remote control session to that computer.

Re: Remote connection to a domain

I'm having the same issue as the original poster. When not at work, I connect to our network via VPN, logging into my machine using the cached domain name/pass. I can literally do anything I want except use Hyena. Every time I click on the expand (plus symbols) on any of the items, I keep getting "Unable to access Active Directory path LDAP:\\##DC1. A local error has occured". I CAN expand the "Server" listing, and each machine listed under "Servers" - However, I can't do anything with them, such as get properties, or look at services, etc.

Using a program called TCPView, I see that I'm requesting data from ##dc1:ldap, and the connection is made. But everything fails...

Any ideas? (I tried the LMHOSTS thing also, but didn't work).

Re: Remote connection to a domain

Are you able to administer this same domain from ADU&C remotely? What functions exactly are you using that trigger this error? And finally, send a screen shot of that error message to suppor[email protected]. Go to File->Manage Object View, click on your domain and send a screen shot of that too so we can see how you have it configured.
